Dell Looks To Windows 8 For Revamp

Dell’s consumer products division is not doing well lately, because of competition from cheap entry-level products in emerging markets by other companies. The company’s earnings reduced by a factor of three. Its shares tumbled in extended trade. Its consumer unit is struggling to slow down the decline in sales. Overall, Dell is struggling. Now the company is planning to revamp its consumer unit with sales of new touchscreen laptops and tablets featuring Windows 8 OS.

Noting that to enjoy the full features of the new touch capable Windows OS people would need new touch enabled devices, Dell, both the company and the CEO, has decided to launch a offer a full complement of Windows 8 products. He quoted,”The product refresh cycle associated with this release of Windows is likely to be very different from other releases, but it’s hard to know exactly what that looks like. We’re preparing a full complement of products, and we’ll be ready with those.” However, Dell also doesn’t expect huge adoption of Windows 8 early on. From his remarks on Windows 8 tablet adoption, it seems that the company would invest equally on touch enabled laptops and tablets.
Dell has tried to tap into the tablet market with its Windows and Android based tablets. But, failed to make waves against Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle Fire. But, the launch of Windows 8 could be a big opportunity for Dell to crack the market. As technology analyst Chris Green at Davies Murphy Group Europe noted, “We see Windows 8 as opportunity for all the PC manufacturers to reclaim the huge ground that they have lost to Apple and some of the other Android tablet makers.”
The question is – could Dell manage to make its fortune out of higher-priced touch enabled Windows 8 devices?

Audi Unveiled Electric Concept Bike: Can Speed Upto 50mph

Renowned car maker Audi has made a two-wheel lithium ion battery powered concept bike. The concept bike, named e-bike Wörthersee, was unveiled at Worthersee Auto News 2012 show in Austria. Car manufacturer Audi used motor racing design principles to build the Audi e-bike Wörthersee. The Audi e-bike Wörthersee is fast enough to be caught out by a speed camera.

Audi's E-bike, Image Credit : Audi
Audi e-bike Wörthersee is constructed with ultra-light carbon-fiber frame which weighs 1,600 grams (3.53 lb) only. The 26-inch wheels are made from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) that weighs 600 grams (1.32 lb) each and have innovative large-area blade-pattern spokes. The rear wheel is driven by a chain. There is an electric motor which is a permanent magnet synchronous machine and is located at the lowest point on the frame and drives the bottom bracket shaft directly. Maximum torque at the rear wheel is in the region of 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft). Peak output from the electric motor is 2.3 kW. Excluding the battery, the complete bicycle weighs only 21 kg (46.30 lb). The lithium-ion battery is placed in the frame that weighs about 5 kg (11.02 lb). It operates at a voltage of 48 V. Its capacity is 530 Wh and it can be fully recharged from a 230 V supply in two and a half hours.
Audi e-bike concept

There are five cycling modes – ‘Pure’ mode, ‘Pedelec’ mode, ‘eGrip’ mode, ‘Power Wheelie’ and ‘Balanced Wheelie’ mode. A cyclist can choose any of these modes while cycling. In the ‘Pure’ mode, the drive power is purely the product of the cyclist’s legs. In ‘Pedelec’ mode the bike driver is supported by the electric motor. It means the driver has to pedal and the motor will also run to speed up the bike. In ‘Pedelec’ mode the bike can achieve a maximum speed of 50mph and gives you a range of 31-44 miles. If the driver selects ‘eGrip’ mode, the Audi e-bike Wörthersee runs solely on the electric motor and can reach a top speed of 31mph. ‘Power Wheelie’ mode is for less skilled bikers with adjustable wheelie angle. In ‘Balanced Wheelie’ mode, the electronic control system maintains the rider’s balance, by compensating the biker’s movements forwards or backwards via the electric motor. These modes can be set using the touchscreen on-bike computer. In addition, by pressing a button, the seat of the bike can rise up and the biker can adopt a comfortable position.
As the electric motor used in the bike is able to speed up to 50mph maximum, so it’s better to wear a helmet while driving this bike (especially for those living in developing countries where it is not mandatory to wear a helmet). The prototype can also be connected to smartphones over WLAN, letting users unlock its security system with their handsets. To know more details, visit Audi

FBI Creates A New Net-Surveillance Unit

FBI has long been wanting to monitor the internet well enough, even it be in clear violation of people’s rights and their privacy. Security has long been a pretext for violating different portions of constitution. And now, it has been revealed that FBI has secretly formed a net-surveillance unit which will try to devise ways to monitor users over internet, wireless and VoIP communications.

FBI has been quiet about the whole thing primarily because not many internet users in US  would take kindly to the notion of being watched all the time by someone who then has the ability to read all the data to and from the user’s computer. The chief purpose of this unit is to eavesdrop on the user’s computer and bring out newer technologies to do so effectively enough.
The unit is formally called Domestic Communications Assistance Center and is tasked with a whole lot of things. These include cyber tools such as intercepting Skype calls or analysing data on a social network or carrier related to some court order to creating actual wiretaps. The unit will act as a helping hand in terms of surveillance for local as well as state and federal police.
FBI has long been working towards this end and had tried to bring internet companies and social networks on board. The agency tried to company the companies not to oppose a law that FBI was trying to have drafted according to which the social networks and other websites will have to allow the agency to sneak into user data and read it.
FBI, after repeated queries about this new group, responded with a statement which reads:
“ The NDCAC will have the functionality to leverage the research and development efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement with respect to electronic surveillance capabilities and facilitate the sharing of technology among law enforcement agencies. Technical personnel from other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies will be able to obtain advice and guidance if they have difficulty in attempting to implement lawful electronic surveillance court orders.
It is important to point out that the NDCAC will not be responsible for the actual execution of any electronic surveillance court orders and will not have any direct operational or investigative role in investigations. It will provide the technical knowledge and referrals in response to law enforcement’s requests for technical assistance.”

Siemens ‘eHighway Of The Future’ Concept Proposes Electrification Of Trucks On Highways

This week at the Electric Vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles, Siemens has announced its ‘eHighway’ concept. The eHighway concept introduces the idea of diesel-electric hybrid trucks which can work like a electric trolley when overhead electric lines are available and work as a diesel truck when overhead electric lines are not available. Siemens says that the technology can significantly reduce carbon emissions by reducing the use of fossil fuels in trucks.

An official video release release shows a demonstration of how the system would work on highways. The hybrid trucks will be equipped on-board software and hardware. When the trucks detect the presence of overhead electric lines the electric poles will be connected to the the wires through on-board poles. This electricity will power the trucks’ electric drive motors, letting the diesel engines shut down. As soon as the trucks leave the lanes with overhead wires, the diesel engine starts up for the manual operation.
According to Siemens, its eHighway concept will minimize air pollution by eliminating tailpipe pollution from trucks. Siemens is testing the technology in Germany. Siemens believes that the eHighway concept would work with any sort of hybrid or range-extended electric vehicles in future .

Apple Patents Multi-Point Touch Focus, A New Way To Use A Camera

Apple’s patents often afford us glimpses to what the company is up to. They also occasionally tell us what we can expect Apple to include in its upcoming products. Now, Apple has patented a multi-touch camera focusing system which is quite unique. This system is to be used with multi-touch systems, so Apple may be considering it for the next iPhone or iPad.

The patent is titled ‘Multi-point touch focus.’ Basically, this system lets you focus more than one things in an image. This means that you can choose two or even three points of focuses when taking an image. When you finally take the image, these highlighted or selected points will be sharper and more clear.
Currently, cameras often allow for one point of focus. But with multiple points of focus, users will be able to bring more clarity in their images and this will give them more freedom when shooting.
However, since this will require a lot of image processing, the patent also speaks of using a dedicated chip for the purpose. This chip will be used solely for image processing and will be able to quickly and effectively render the images taken by the user.
The patent reads, “A camera includes a lens arranged to focus an image on an image sensor and a touch sensitive visual display for freely selecting two or more regions of interest on a live preview image by touch input. An image processor is coupled to the image sensor and the touch sensitive visual display. The image processor displays the live preview image according to the image focused on the image sensor by the lens. The image processor further receives the selection the regions of interest and controls acquisition of the image from the image sensor based on the characteristics of the image in regions that correspond to at least two of the regions of interest on the live preview image. The image processor may optimize sharpness and/or exposure of the image in at least two of the regions of interest. The image processor may track movement of the selected regions of interest.”
Naturally, this is a very exciting prospect and can entirely change the experience of using cameras in intelligent devices such as smartphones and tablets. We just hope that Apple decides to include this system in one of its upcoming products.

Schmidt Advises Grads To Turn Off The Screen For One Hour And Spend The Time With Beloved Ones

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt told a group of Boston University graduates on Sunday to step away from their computers for one hour daily and to spend the time with your beloved ones. At least this would help human beings to see the real world without the technology and internet.

Eric Schmidt, Image Credit: Google
On last Sunday, Eric Schmidt was delivering the 129th commencement address at the Boston University. He advised the students to “Take one hour a day and turn that thing (computer) off. Take your eyes off that screen and look into the eyes of the person you love. Have a conversation, a real conversation.”
As the technologies are being developed rapidly and the social media has evolved at a breakneck speed it has become easy for people to communicate with others without being physically close to each other. But this has largely led people to forget the feeling of having real conversations face to face. Therefore, sometimes the bonding of real relationships goes away. Schmidt recognized the phenomenon saying, “You are emblems of the sense of possibility that will define this age. If you’re awake, you’re online, you’re connected. Some of you are probably tweeting this speech right now.”
Through internet and social medias, people gets involved with previously unknown persons but often forgets his beloved ones. Schmidt has urged the recent graduates to turn their screens off for an hour daily and to “look into the eyes of the person” they love. Have a look at the video where he was giving his speech at the Boston University.

Adobe Finally Launches Subscription Service For Creative Cloud

A few days ago, we reported that Adobe had finally launched and made available its Create Suite 6. Back then, Adobe also promised that it will be making its Creative Cloud available on May 11th. And now, the company has lived up to its promise. The subscription service for Creative Cloud is finally live.

The Creative Cloud is a very novel and excellent idea by Adobe. With the help of CC, Adobe has made all its software available to common users for a monthly fee, so that you no longer have to buy the software at their actual hefty prices.
It is not exactly a running-in-the-cloud software, as the name suggests. Rather, the software download to the user’s machines in the form of relevant apps and the users can create whatever he wishes to through these apps. He can then store his creations in the cloud and then access them from a number of other devices.
Moreover, the prices for Creative Cloud are quite affordable. Just imagine that you only occasionally wanted to make use of Adobe’s software, you wouldn’t want to pay thousands of dollars for the whole suite. Rather, you can simply subscribe on monthly basis whenever you need them. The monthly subscription fee for users is $75 per month or if they go for annual subscription, $50 per month.
Being offered together with the cloud, Creative Cloud subscription will come with 20 GB of storage space online through Dropbox. Moreover, the service will also offer web hosting and a number of exciting social networking tools. We are very excited about this offering by Adobe and we sure would like to know what do you think about it.
